Cooking With Kids: Cheese Straws

By | January 6, 2011

Cass over at The Diary of a Frugal Family is starting a fortnightly feature called ‘Cooking With Kids’.

This is the first week and the recipe she has chosen for us is cheese straws.  C is only 18 months so is a bit young really but I try to involve her when I can, even if that means she steals half the cheese before it gets into the mixing bowl!

Here are the ingredients:

  • 150g self raising flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 30g margarine
  • 75g grated cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk

And here’s what we did:

  • Preheat oven to 200c/ 400f/ gas mark 6
  • Mix the salt into the flour then rub the margarine into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs
  • Add in the cheese, leaving a handful for later
  • Beat the egg and milk together then stir into the cheesey flour mixture, saving a little to brush the tops of the straws with later
  • Roll the dough out to about 1cm thick and cut into strips/ shapes
  • Brush the top of the straws with the egg/milk mix and sprinkle with a little cheese
  • Put them onto a greased baking tray and cook for 10-12 minutes

They’re really nice and I’m certain we’ll be making them again!  I need to find something so C can reach the worktop properly and still be safe though – any ideas?

It’s never too early to start cooking with kids!

With the geekdaughter I always fancied a Little Helper Fun Pod – http://www.littlehelper.co.uk/product.php?id=27 – but it’s pricey and I didn’t cook enough to make it worthwhile. I can tell i’m going to get tempted again when the geekson is a little older, asa I now try to cook a healthy family lunch every day, and I suspect he’ll enjoy being involved with that, just like the geekdaughter does.

Thanks. Someone else has recommended one of those on Twitter. Must check them out!

Love that your LO sits and eats the cheese – that’s the beauty of cooking with young ones! Your’s look delicious; I love the shape you made – like pillows almost 😀
