It’s Pancake Day!

  • Mix a pancake,
    Stir a pancake,
    Pop it in the pan;
    Fry the pancake,
    Toss the pancake,
Catch it if you can! *

Today is Shrove Tuesday, or pancake day.

Shrove Tuesday in the Christian calendar is the last day before Lent.  As Lent was a time of fasting, Shrove Tuesday became the day when all the fats, eggs, cream and sugar needed to be used up.  This is why we traditionally eat pancakes on this day – they are a perfect way of using up all these ingredients.

We love pancakes in our house, although we cannot agree on the fillings to have.  I just stick to traditional lemon & sugar but M likes his pancakes savoury and fills them with bacon and beans *shudder*

But what other things go on pancakes?  I’ve scoured the web and come up with this list:

First the sweet fillings

  • Banana slices and vanilla ice cream
  • Melted chocolate
  • Strawberries and whipped cream
  • Maple syrup
  • Mango and greek yoghurt

And the savoury

  • Mince and gravy
  • Bolognese
  • Cheese and tomatoes
  • Marmite
  • Spinach & ricotta

What’s your favourite filling?
