Christmas Traditions

We don’t seem to have many Christmas traditions in our house.  After all, this is only our third Christmas as a ‘family’ so we’re still pretty new to all this.  Ask me in twenty years time and I’m sure I’ll have a very long list.

I want to have Christmas traditions; happy memories and things that my children will continue to do when they have a family of their own, and I’m sure we will, but for now we have:

New pyjamas: This is something I’ve decided rather than something that was done when I was younger.  C, and any more children we may have, get new pyjamas to wear on Christmas Eve.  This is the first year I’ve done this but will definitely be carrying it on.

Christmas morning walk: I get this from my parents.  We open our presents, mum (that’d be me then) prepares dinner then we go for a walk to visit the grandparents.  Luckily my parents only live around the corner and M’s parents are only a 10 minute walk away.

Putting the tree up: There are two things related to this.  First, the tree must not be put up before my Grandma’s birthday (8th) and second, there is a specific way to decorate the tree; lights, baubles, tinsel, angel.  This is the correct way and nobody must change it.

Stockings: I still have a small stocking hung up at my parents house and, even though I’m all grown up with my own family, my mum still fills it with sweets and chocolates for me to find (usually about a week after Christmas these days but I’d be sad if she stopped doing it!).  This is something I’ll do with C until long after she’s left home.

I’m sure in a few years time this list will have grown as we make our own traditions as a family.

What Christmas traditions do you have?  Are they something you did with your parents or things you’ve started yourself?

Great traditions. My mother in law still does stockings for all of us grown up children as well. x

that is a wonderful set of traditions and i especially like the new pyjamas one…….maybe i will pinch this one going forward!!
its funny because my OH and i were discussing what traditions, if indeed any, we have started for our two boys yet and we couldn’t think of any, but your post and one i read earlier today has inspired me to give it some thought and maybe write a next christmas resolution type post! so thank you xx

Lovely post. Tradition is very important and I’m all for introducing new ones. We bought an advent house last year and although only just 2 at Christmas, the Little Chap could describe in detail what the house looked like and was looking forward to opening the doors in the run up to Christmas this year. He’s making it pretty clear this year that he’d like a few of his own – he wants to see his godparents again ‘for Christmas’ and wants to leave a carrot and some water for Rudolph – just as long as he doesn’t forget the whisky and mince pie for Santa :-)
