Lego Duplo Creative Cakes

By | May 1, 2012

As you probably know, we’re part of the Lego Duplo Blogger Panel which means we get sent fab Duplo products to test out from time to time.  This time around we were sent the Creative Cakes, which comes with candles, meringues and cupcake cases so we can create our own cupcakes and birthday cakes.

C absolutely loves playing with this set and I, despite my initial reservations, think it’s nice to have a bit of Duplo that’s girly.  Just for a change!

C loves role playing and this set is great for her.  She’s regularly to be found lining her teddys up with a plate and a cake each, or asking me if I’d prefer chocolate or strawberry cake today.  It can also be used in an educational way; she counts how many candles there are on the cakes, or how many cupcakes she’s ‘baked’ and it reinforces her knowledge of colours too.

Creative cakes really captures her imagination and she can spend hours playing with this.  The lid of the box also doubles up as a tray so as well as building the cakes, she can pretend to be a waitress or a shopkeeper too.

We went away for a few days recently and the only thing that C asked to play with while we were away was her Duplo.  We’re off to Butlins in a couple of weeks and she keeps telling me we’ve got to take her box of Duplo with us this time.

In our house, no other toy comes close to her giant box of Duplo.  It beats everything else, hands down.  And even as she grows she’ll still be able to play with it, and mix it with regular Lego too as they all fit together.

If only I could teach her how to pack it away again!

Win a Family Ticket to In The Night Garden Live

By | April 30, 2012

Top-selling children’s show, In the Night Garden Live, is back by popular demand with a new 2012 tour and I have a family ticket ticket to give away!

The smash-hit show brings the world of In the Night Garden to the stage with children able to see their favourite CBeebies’ stars Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka and friends up close.

In the Night Garden Live takes place in its own all-weather, purpose-built inflatable showdome with many family-friendly facilities. This site-specific structure proved to be a huge hit with children and parents on its previous tours and this summer will be travelling to 3 London venues: the Live Quarter at The O2 (24 May to 9 June); Old Deer Park, Richmond (16 – 30 June); and Brent Cross (7 – 22 July).

To be in a chance with winning a family ticket to one of the London venues (for 4 people, minimum 1 adult), please answer the following question:

Q: What does Makka Pakka like collecting?

Please provide your name and email address, as well as stating which venue and performance you would like to see.  I will then e-mail the winner to get their contact number and confirm the performance/venue choice.

The competition closes at midnight on Friday 18th May 2012.

The tickets are non-transferable and subject to availability. No cash alternatives, accommodation or travel are provided in this competition. For further show information www.nightgardenlive.com or 0333 300 0023.

Tots100 Film Club: Happy Feet 2

By | April 30, 2012

April’s film choice is Happy Feet 2, a film I thought C would really enjoy; animated and with animals in – what more could a toddler want?

As it turns out, I really enjoyed the film too.  The cast is pretty amazing with my favourites being Brad Pitt and Matt Damon as Will and Bill the Krill.  Other stars include Elijah Wood, Robin Williams and Hank Azaria.

The story centres around Erik, the son of Mumble from the original Happy Feet.  Erik feels like he doesn’t belong in Emperor land as he doesn’t like to dance like all the other penguins so he follows Ramon to Adelie land where he meets The Mighty Sven, a penguin who can fly.

Mumble orders Erik back to Emperor land but when they return they discover an iceberg has shifted and the Emperor penguins are trapped on all sides by large walls of ice.

The penguins have to persuade the Adelie penguins and some elephant seals that they met on their journey to come with them and dance in order to shift the iceberg so they can free the trapped Emperor penguins.

As for C, she really enjoyed the film.  I don’t think she really understood the plot and she kept asking me lots of questions but that didn’t seem to make it any less enjoyable for her.  There were a lot of characters in the film which took some thinking about to keep up with but I think this will be a film that is asked for again and again.

It’s a real feel good film.  My favourite line in the whole film is when Will and Bill are discussing dancing and Will says “It brings out my happy”.  I just think that’s a great way to describe something!

Thanks to the Tots100 film club for providing us with another great family film.

Meal Planning Monday (30/04/12)

By | April 30, 2012

Another Monday has come around far too fast.  It’s even more annoying today as it’s a gorgeous sunny day but it has rained all weekend.  Oh well, it’s got to be nice at the weekend soon right?

We have a normal week this week, 3 days of work for me then a fabulous bank holiday weekend.  This weeks meals are all fairly standard things that are cooked regularly; I really need to go recipe hunting and find something new to cook for next week.

This week’s meals are going to be:

  • Fish curry (details of which are being left to the husband)
  • Spaghetti bolognese
  • Bacon with fried mushrooms, new potatoes and peas
  • Beef pies with vegetables
  • Chicken fajitas and nachos

What are you eating this week?  Check out Mrs M’s for more meal planning Monday posts.
